Three people were injured, two seriously, in a two-alarm apartment fire early Wednesday in southwest Charlotte. The blaze apparently destroyed one multi-unit building at the Sun Valley Apartments, in the 8400 block of Lodge South Circle.
Charlotte fire officials said they received the call about 3 a.m. from the apartment complex off Arrowood Road between Nations Ford and Old Pineville roads. Firefighters found flames and smoke coming from building 8434.
Residents told reporters of fleeing for their lives as flames spread quickly.
Charlotte fire Capt. Mark Basnight said two alarms were sounded, and it took a crew of 48 firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control. The ceiling on the top floor of the building collapsed during the fire.
Kristin Young, a spokeswoman for Medic, said two people were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Crews at the scene described those injuries as burns.
All 20 units of the building are uninhabitable, and the American Red Cross says it is caring for 16 residents who have been displaced.
