Iredell man arrested while sitting in courtroom

Iredell County authorities say Archie Gilbert Chambers picked the wrong place to sit in a courtroom earlier this month, and it has landed him in jail.

The sheriff’s office says Chambers, 57, of Statesville, was arrested for violating a domestic violence protection order. He is being held without bond, due to the domestic violence nature of the arrest, deputies say.

According to the sheriff’s office, Sgt. Sean Schutt of the Special Victims Unit was in District Court, preparing to testify in several cases, when he noticed Chambers sitting in the courtroom gallery next to a woman. Investigators say Schutt and other detectives were familiar with Chambers because he was the defendant in a civil domestic violence hearing.

Schutt realized Chambers was prohibited, by order, from having contact with the woman who was sitting next to him in court that day. After determining that the domestic violence protection order was still in effect, deputies took Chambers into custody.
