On the road...

Around this time four years ago, I gave in to the tugging on my heart… I took a leap of faith and ordered a batch of 2,500 “Remember Brian 06-12-08” silicone bracelets, with no plan beyond that single act. John thought it was a foolish idea, although he gave me the okay; in the back of his mind, he was convinced we’d be giving those bracelets away for a very long time…

As it turned out, he was both right and wrong. We’re still giving away bracelets; however that first group of them is long gone… The rest is history…hopefully with more in the making…

I’m on another road trip, this time out to the coast… For the first time ever, John is with me. We’re heading to E.A. Laney High School in Wilmington, NC. Last fall, the school received a grant from State Farm’s Project Ignition program supporting a student-led initiative advocating safe driving behaviors in teens... Over the course of this week, the E.A. Laney High School Project Ignition team and the Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) Club are hosting a variety of events designed to raise awareness about driver distractions of all kinds; I will be sharing Brian’s Story with students during one of those programs as a small part of their campaign: “Let’s Take Action, Down With Distractions”.

I’m not sure if John will actually sit in on my presentation, and I’m alright with that. The fact that he came with me at all is a really big deal; while he always asks “How did it go?”, actually hearing me relive the worst day of our lives would be extremely hard for him. One of us doing it is more than enough…

But you never know. He might surprise me…and of course, the allure of being inside of the Michael J. Jordan Gymnasium could help propel him in…

Whatever he decides, I’m glad we’re here. Together. Trying to make a difference, one bracelet at a time…

Wishing you many blessings…tg
