For decades, his baritone renderings of “How Great Thou Art” and “I’d Rather Have Jesus” were highlights at Billy Graham Crusades around the world. And on Wednesday, evangelist Graham saluted singer George Beverly Shea, who died Tuesday at age 104, as “one of the most humble and greatest Christians I have ever known.”
“I would rather hear him sing than anyone else I know,” the Charlotte-born Graham, now 94, said in a statement. “He and I look forward to seeing each other in heaven.”
A public funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Anderson Auditorium, 302 Lookout Road in Montreat.
On Monday, he will be buried at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte after a private family service. The library will be closed Monday, then will reopen Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Samaritan’s Purse, World Medical Mission or the Salvation Army.
