Suspect convicted of shooting, paralyzing man

A Mecklenburg County jury Monday found a 22-year-old Charlotte man guilty of attempted murder charges for shooting and paralyzing a man who tried to buy marijuana from him.

Megael Matthews was sentenced to spend between 16 and 21 years in prison for shooting a man who used a fake $100 bill in the 2011 drug transaction on Christenbury Hills Lane in Charlotte.

Matthews fired several shots at the victim’s car as he drove away, striking the man in the back and causing him to lose the use of his legs, arms and ability to speak, prosecutors said.

After a five-day trial, the jury found Matthews guilty of first-degree attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious harm or injury, discharging a firearm into an occupied property inflicting serious injury and six counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property while in operation.
