Police investigate fatal shooting in Steele Creek area

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were canvassing the Steele Creek area at the intersection of South Tryon Street and Whitehall Drive after a man was found dead of a gunshot wound in the Applebee’s parking lot Wednesday night.

Police responded to an assault with deadly weapon call just after 7 p.m. They found the man dead in a silver sedan in the restaurant’s rear parking lot.

Capt. Chris Dozier could not confirm in a 9 p.m. news conference whether the case was a homicide or whether police were searching for suspects.

He said detectives were still gathering information about the identity of the deceased man.

The manager from Planet Fitness, a 24-hour gym across the street, called police about the incident when a man came into the gym to report hearing a gunshot and seeing a body inside the vehicle.

Detectives had blocked off the Applebee’s parking lot as bystanders and media stood nearby.

Investigators took the VIN number and photographs of a black sedan in a parking lot near the scene but did not comment on whether it was tied to the shooting.
