Charlotte defense lawyer charged with DWI

A high-profile Charlotte defense attorney was arrested Monday on a DWI charge after N.C. Highway Patrol troopers stopped him for speeding on Interstate 85.

Norman Butler, 61, was pulled over on I-85 at the Mallard Creek exit at 10:54 p.m., according to Mecklenburg County arrest records.

Butler most recently defended Andre Hampton, the Charlotte man who beat to death his infant son, during his death penalty trial. Hampton was sentenced to life in prison.

Troopers arrested Butler after he refused to take a breathalyzer test, WCNC-TV reported.

In addition to DWI, Butler was charged with speeding.
