Matthews class wins national reading contest

A fifth-grade class at Matthews Elementary was the top finisher in a national reading contest.

The Top 100 BOOK IT! contest tracks the number of minutes that students spend reading, which has exceeded 300,000 minutes this year. Students received “Read Your Heart Out” T-shirts, and the class received a $50 gift card for pizza.

The readers were Ayla Ajanovic, Forest Baker, Jessica Couts, Fariyah Dowden, Kylie Drake, Blake Fasciolo, Colby Guylitto, Bennett Hubbard, Madelyn Hubbs, Jonae Johnson, Mia Kapetanakis, Shelby Koelz, Alyssa Lago, Caitlyn Mahoney, Micha’l McAlpine, Trinity McDuffie, Alex Middleton, Tyler Shroyer, Jacen Slover, Alli Smith, Maria Ward, Zach Weisgarber, Thomas Wheeler, Carter Whitten and Kirsty Zubko.
