West Charlottes Kennedy Meeks is the All-Observer boys basketball player of the year.
Meeks, named the I-Meck 4A conference player of the year, averaged 19 points and 16 rebounds this season. He led West Charlotte to a fourth straight N.C. 4A sectional playoff final and became the third Charlottean to play in the McDonalds All-American game, following Providences Antawn Jamison in 1995 and Jeff McInnis of West Charlotte and Oak Hill (Va.) in 1993.
Meeks was named to the N.C. Associated Press All-State team for the third time and makes the All-Observer team for the third straight season as well. Meeks was the only N.C. player to play in the Jordan Brand Classic all-star game in New York this month.
Meeks led West Charlotte to a state championship win as a sophomore and another state final appearance as a junior. Meeks Lions made three straight N.C. 4A Western Regional championship games. The Lions lost in the regional championship game in Meeks freshman year. As a senior, West Charlotte lost in the sectional final, one win away from a fourth straight regional.
The All-Observer boys coach of the year is Olympics Ty Baumgardner, who led his team to a 30-0 season and a N.C. 4A championship. Olympic was the first Mecklenburg County public school to go unbeaten since West Charlotte in 1986. Baumgardners team finished the season ranked No. 11 in USA Todays national poll. Baumgardner was also the first Mecklenburg County coach to win the N.C. Associated Press boys coach of the year.
• The All-Observer teams are voted on by the newspapers high school sports staff. Players must be nominated by their schools. The All-Mecklenburg team, for the top players inside the county, was announced Saturday. The All-Region team, for the top players outside Mecklenburg County, was released Thursday. They are both available at charlotteobserver.com/preps The All-Observer team is a collection of the top players from the newspapers 133-school coverage area in North and South Carolina.
Shelton Mitchell, Cuthbertson, 6-3, Jr., G: Top 25 national recruit has committed to Wake Forest; averaged 20.4 ppg, 4.2 apg and led his team to a second straight N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2A state finals appearance. Will play at Oak Hill (Va.) next season.
Gabe DeVoe, Shelby, 6-3, Jr., G: Averaged 20.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 4.5 apg and 1.8 steals. Led team to 48-11 record the past two seasons. Has 4.2 GPA.
Kennedy Meeks, West Charlotte, 6-10, Sr., F: McDonalds All-American and UNC recruit is three-time all-state pick; averaged 19 ppg, 16 rpg, three assists and three blocks.
Luke Maye, Hough, 6-7, So., F: Averaged 19 ppg, 14 rpg and two assists; had 26 double-doubles and led team to first NCHSAA 4A Western regional berth.
BJ Gladden, Olympic, 6-5, Sr, F: Akron recruit averaged 13 ppg, 8 rpg to lead Olympic to a 30-0 season and the schools first state basketball championship. District 9 player of the year.
