3 among N.C.'s best at math competition

Lloyd Liu of Matthews, David Spencer of Charlotte and Zack Lee of Pineville placed in the top 20 of the 123 mathematics students who participated in the 35th annual high school state mathematics competition, by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

Students competing in the state mathematics contest are the top 8 percent of those who participated in regional mathematics contests earlier this year.

Lloyd, an eighth-grader at Randolph Middle, finished sixth and won a $300 gift certificate for the Art of Problem Solving. David, a senior at NCSSM, was seventh. Zack, a seventh-grader at Randolph Middle, was 16th.
