Rain delays I-485 lane closures

Sunday night’s heavy rain forced the postponement of the start of construction on Interstate 485 in southern Mecklenburg County, and the N.C. Department of Transportation says the project could be delayed several more days.

Lane Construction was scheduled to begin setting barrier walls on I-485 Sunday night, between I-77 and Johnston Road. The barrier walls are designed to protect crews who are working on the addition of two lanes to I-485 between I-77 and Rea Road.

Workers already have strengthened the outside shoulders of I-485, to prepare for a traffic shift during the widening project.

Jen Thompson, a spokeswoman for the NCDOT, said Lane Construction might postpone the work for a few more nights, if predicted rain materializes. If the work takes place, it will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
