J.H. Gunn Elementary teacher assistant wins district honor

Frances Stitt had just arrived to J.H. Gunn Elementary early Thursday when she was asked to go into the school’s media center.

Stitt, a teacher assistant at Gunn, admits she fussed a bit. She was eager to get to her class, she said, “to check on my babies.”

But school officials had a surprise for Stitt. As Gunn students kicked off their morning announcements, Principal Monique Davis took the microphone to announce that Stitt had been named the 2012-13 Teacher Assistant of the Year for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

The news left Stitt speechless for a few moments, before she repeatedly thanked colleagues for the honor.

Stitt began working at Gunn six years ago after leaving the Charlotte Housing Authority. She initially worked as a substitute, but has been a teacher assistant for the past five years.
