Club presentation on Galapagos Islands
Charlotte’s Magellan Travel Club will hold its final spring program from 6 to 8 p.m. May 7 at Total Wine & More, at Promenade on Providence (5341 Ballantyne Commons Parkway S.).
The meeting will include a presentation about cruising in South America, especially the famous and exotic Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador, as well as tastings of South American wines.

MAY 9-12 Black Mountain
Spring 2013 LEAF Festival
The twice-a-year LEAF festival of arts, entertainment and education returns May 9-12 to the historic Lake Eden Road site in Black Mountain. Headline performers this spring include R&B icon Mavis Staples; urban Latino culture-mashers Ozomatli; the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band; Zimbabwean maestro Oliver Mtukudzi & the Black Spirits; and Abigail Washburn, Appalachian singer and long-time LEAF favorite. The event also includes other live music ranging from ethnic and classical to jazz and gospel; art and craft exhibitions and poetry slams. Cherokee, settlers clash at re-enactment
Eastern Tennessee’s Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area will stage the Siege of Fort Watauga May 18 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) and 19 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.). It recreates the two-week siege of settlers by 300 Cherokee warriors. The clashes, featuring 150 re-enactors, are scheduled for 1 p.m. both days; you can also visit the fort, militia camps, British camp and Cherokee camp. Admission is free.
