Vance High classes back in session

Classes at Vance High School in University City resumed around 10:30 a.m. after students and staff were evacuated earlier in the morning due to the smell of natural gas.

Charlotte Fire Department responded around 9:30 a.m. to the school, located 7600 IBM Drive, and worked with Piedmont Natural Gas officials to investigate reports of a gas leak. Fire officials said it took about 35 minutes to get the leak under control

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg School spokesperson confirmed the building was cleared and it was safe for classes to resume.
