The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman they say lied about her daughter being kidnapped -- a claim that led to a statewide Amber Alert on Sunday.

Mary Bowen, 25, was booked in the Lincoln County Jail Tuesday on charge of falsifying a report to police.

Detectives will seek to strike from the records a second-degree kidnapping warrant charging Troy Lee Koonce, of Washington, N.C., according to a press release.

Investigators say Bowen told deputies that Koonce – who she identified as a cousin and ex-boyfriend – kidnapped 3-year-old Christina Koonce outside a home on Grandview Lane in Lincolnton.

Bowen said she refused to return to Washington, N.C., with him and so Koonce took the child.

But when detectives investigated, they found that Koonce was the child’s father.
