A former foster parent in Spencer has been charged with eight sex crimes against children, and investigators in Spencer are asking people who believe they were victimized to come forward.

William Wayne Jones was being held at the Rowan County Detention Center on $1,000,000 bond. He’s charged with four counts of sexual offense and four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child

Jones and his wife were formerly licensed foster parents, responsible for children placed in their care from November 2001 to March 2004.

Police believe the alleged offenses occurred in the home they shared then at 314 North Yadkin Avenue, in Spencer.

According to a press release, Jones revealed details of the crime during an open court proceeding in Tennessee.

Afterward, he was interviewed by Cocke County detectives, who forwarded information to an investigator in Spencer. That investigator obtained warrants for Jones, who was extradited to Rowan County on Friday.

According to a background check performed by the Observer, Jones has no criminal record other than minor traffic offenses in the four states he’s lived in.

In addition to North Carolina, he’s lived in Tennessee, West Virginia and Florida.
