Off-duty CMPD detective hurt when gun accidentally fires

An off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police detective was injured Wednesday night at Phillips Place in south Charlotte when his gun accidentally fired just after 9 p.m. He suffered a non-life-threatening wound to his leg, officials said.

Police say the detective realized he was injured and notified a CMPD officer who was working at Phillips Place. The off-duty detective was transported to Carolinas Medical Center and treated. His name was not released pending notification of family.

Police were investigating late Wednesday. Detectives with the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct a separate but parallel investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were followed, which is standard when an officer discharges a firearm.
