Police search for suspect in Statesville murder

Police said a 22-year-old man died after being shot in the south end of Salisbury Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to a house at 128 East Raleigh Avenue just before 4 p.m. and found Dantae Laquan Stokes inside suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to Iredell Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Statesville police have obtained a murder warrant on 22-year-old Byron Lee Smyre and are asking anyone with information about this case or the whereabouts of Smyre to call 704-878-3406 or Iredell Crime stoppers at 704-662-1340.
