Think salt is just good on your fries?
Here are some not-so-obvious uses for salt in the kitchen:
• Add a pinch of salt to a new carton of milk, and it will last longer.
• Stop sliced apples, pears and potatoes from browning by dipping them into a bowl of lightly salted cold water.
• When boiling eggs, add salt to make them easier to peel. Try with shelled pecans to make them easier to pick.
• Extinguish grease fires by dousing them with salt.
Salt as a great cleaner:
• Scrub tea- and coffee-stained mugs or glasses with salt.
• Blot a wine stain gently and then sprinkle the stain with salt. The salt will absorb the wine. Rinse in cold water.
• Make a paste of olive oil and salt and use on white rings left from hot dishes or beverage glasses on furniture. Rub the paste on the spot, allow to stand for two hours and wipe away.
• Clean a coffee pot by adding ice cubes and salt and swishing around. That removes stains and improves the taste of your morning joe.
• Revive wicker furniture by scrubbing with salt water and a sturdy brush. Allow the furniture to dry in the sun, then rinse.
Health benefits of salt:
• Sore throats can be soothed by gargling from a 6-ounce glass of warm water and a half-teaspoon of salt.
• Aching feet will feel great after a soak in warm salt water.
• Take the pain out of a bee sting by applying a paste made with a little water and salt.
• Relieve the itch of poison ivy by soaking exposed area in hot salt water.
• Soak candles in a strong salt solution so they won’t drip when lit.
• Remove bad odors from sneakers by shaking in some salt, which removes moisture.
