Police investigating fatal east Charlotte shooting

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a fatal shooting in east Charlotte that happened early Saturday.

Police found Adam Shawn Santiago, 25, in the 8500 block of Filbert Lane with an apparent gunshot wound.

They responded to a call about a shooting at 1:12 a.m., according to a release from the police department, and Santiago was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Santiago and a suspect got in a fight, and then the suspect shot him. Authorities have not said what the fight was about.

After the shooting, police said the suspect went into a nearby house.

Police found the suspect, who agreed to go to police headquarters for questioning.

Officer Jessica Lawrence, a CMPD spokeswoman, said the suspect was interviewed but isn’t being charged at this time. She said the investigation is ongoing.

Santiago moved to Charlotte a few years ago from Long Island, N.Y., said one of his friends from there, Jonathan Dent.

Dent said he’s in disbelief.

“I don’t understand it,” he said in a phone interview. “Adam was a good dude. He never started nothing with nobody.”

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
