I-85 South reopens after wreck

By Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

Interstate 85 was expected to be fully open in time for morning traffic after a multi-vehicle wreck shut down the southbound lanes for hours on Sunday.

A tractor-trailer driver was trapped and had to be freed from his cab by firefighters with the jaws of life before being taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

An update on his condition was not available late Sunday.

The wreck happened about 4:30 p.m. near Graham Street, shutting down I-85 south as heavy rain descended on the Charlotte area.

The wreck involved several vehicles, including two tractor-trailers that collided.

Several lanes remained closed through the evening, backing up traffic for miles.
