Dedicated to honoring and encouraging self-expression and diversity while promoting health, well-being and personal growth, Charlotte Roller Girls is a skater-owned and operated sports organization. All members have regular day jobs and super-cool rink names (check out the team here!) for their derby alter-egos, and believe it or not, some of the Roller Girls are even moms!

Mom of 3 boys, Dyno-mite Daphne, also known as Tammy Lynn Adkins, 38, of Mooresville joined The Charlotte Roller Girls in 2012.

Q. How did you get involved?

A. I had wanted to join derby for a few years now but I was diagnosed with UC (ulcerative colitis) a few years ago and I was trying to get that all figured out. Last year a close friend of mine told me she was playing roller derby and I figured I am getting up in age so its either now or never, and here I am!

Q. What has it made you learn about yourself?

A. I have always been a confident person but roller derby makes me push myself harder. And do things on skates I never thought I would do!

Q. What do your kids and family think?

A. My husband is the most supportive person. I am thankful for him everyday! He loves the fact that i am a roller derby player. My kids are supportive but they are teenaged boys so they have to be cool about it.

Q. Do they come watch you?

A. I haven't actually played in a game yet. I am the 1st Alternate for our May 18th bout, which I am so excited about because I am a new player and making the roster can be very competitive. I plan on working harder so I can make the official roster for the next bout on June 23.

Q. What is your favorite part of the derby?

A. I love being part of such an amazing organization! For us its not just playing derby but its about involving ourselves in the community, which is an amazing feeling.

Q. What was your worst injury?

A. Well, this is a great one its my first and worst. I sprained my ankle, and ankles take forever to heal, so I am still skating on it and it works for the most part!

Q. What else do you do for work?

A. I am a veterinary technician full-time at Animal Health Care Center and part-time at Carolina Veterinary Specialists. Working with animals is the best job!

Q. How are you able to manage family time with work and the derby?

A. Having great kids and amazing husband makes it possible. My kids help around the house and are very understanding when I have to practice. It makes the time we do get to spend together very special.
