Independence widening meeting later today

The public will have a chance to examine plans for the widening of East Independence Boulevard at a meeting Tuesday evening in southeast Charlotte.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is sponsoring an informational workshop from 4-7 p.m. at the Independence Regional Library, on Conference Drive near Monroe Road. The program will have a drop-in format, with no formal presentations scheduled.

The $51.2-million project calls for widening 1.6 miles of Independence Boulevard to a median-divided eight-lane road, between Albemarle Road and Wallace Lane. The project includes building interchanges at Sharon Amity and Idlewild roads, along with an overpass for Conference Drive and an extension of the Charlotte Area Transit System bus lanes.

Completion of the project is scheduled for October 2016.
