Here are a few parties outside of uptown, should you wish to take it slower than Speed Street. Just remember that Memorial Day is about a lot more than just a long weekend and big parties!

Great Gatsby Gala at Sullivan’s Steakhouse (1928 South Blvd.): A roaring night of live music, flappers, raffle prizes and throwback prices, including $6 cocktails and menu items. 7 p.m. Free. 704-335-8228.

Memorial Day Celebration at the Rusty Rudder (20210 Henderson Road, Cornelius): A Memorial Day party that starts at 5 p.m. Friday and goes until Monday night. Live performances from Burning Bright (Friday), Early Ray Band (Saturday), Blue Monday (Sunday), and Simplified (Monday). Never a cover, even when bands are playing. 704-892-9195.

Country Star Thomas Rhett live at T-Bones at the Lake (3990 Charlotte Hwy, Lake Wylie): This Memorial Day serenade on the water is completely free of charge. 6:30 p.m. 704-570-1037.

Goodbye... and hello

Dixie’s Tavern in uptown closed its doors last weekend, but SouthPark has a new addition: J. Sam’s just opened in Piedmont Town Center (4625 Piedmont Row Drive), an artsy-eclectic neighborhood wine bar that also offers beer and spirits and a “farm to fork” menu. Locally owned and operated, it’s even decorated with artwork from Carolina-based artists. 980-406-3761.
