United Way show focuses on volunteers

The newest “United Way & You” television show, which airs for the first time Sunday afternoon, will focus on the need for volunteers to work with children.

Annabelle Suddreth of A Child’s Place and Blair Campbell of the YMCA will discuss how programs and volunteers can make a significant difference in reading skills for at-risk youth. The show airs at 12:30 p.m. on WTVI and will be rebroadcast during June on the Government Channel, available to Time Warner customers.

United Way officials say many at-risk children fall farthest behind their peers in the summer, when they are out of school and often not reading.

Suddreth and Campbell will discuss how children in the Y Readers program gained an average of three months’ reading ability over the summer.
