Troopers: drunk man crashes into troopers directing race traffic

A man who troopers say had a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit crashed his car into four patrol cruisers, injuring two troopers Saturday afternoon.

Troopers say Patrick J. Willis had a 9-year-old child in the back seat of his 2013 Lexus when the collision occurred around 3:30 Saturday.

According to the Highway Patrol, Willis was coming off the Interstate 485 Ramp onto N.C. 29, near Charlotte Motor Speedway.

He didn’t slow down at the top of the ramp, and collided with the troopers, whose cars were parked in the median as they directed race traffic. The troopers received just bumps and bruises. No one else was injured.

Willis was released from jail on a $500 unsecured bond.
