Man slips, drowns in Burke County near waterfall

MORGANTON -- Officials in Burke County say it apparently was an accident that took the life of a man who drowned Sunday in Pisgah National Forest.

The man’s body was recovered Monday, after more than 50 people took part in the search and then recovery. The victim’s name has not been released.

The drowning took place when the man was walking in a waterfall area near Steele Creek. Authorities in Burke County say the man slipped, then fell into the waters.

His body was spotted Sunday evening but not recovered until Monday. The drowning took place in a remote mountainous area in the western part of Burke County.

The U.S. Forest Service is investigating the death.
