LILESVILLE -- A Richmond County man drowned Monday evening while swimming in the Pee Dee River, according to the Anson County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say they were called shortly after 7 p.m., when witnesses said a man began experiencing problems while swimming in the river near Lilesville. Someone from shore tried to rescue the man but failed.

Rescue crews recovered the man’s body shortly before midnight. The sheriff’s office identified the victim as Matthew Callahan, 26, of Rockingham.
