Authorities were searching for a woman who stole two French Bulldog puppies each worth about $2,000 from a Catawba County breeder.
Vale resident Jane Burgess, a 39-year-old breeder, said a South Carolina woman came to her house last week to look at two of her new puppies.
The woman told Burgess she was taking the puppies outside to play with them, but instead put them in her car and drove away, Burgess said.
The breeder said she began to scream and grabbed the driver-side door of the woman’s minivan. She was dragged about 25 feet before she had to let go, she said.
Catawba County deputies responded to Burgess’ home soon after the suspect had fled.
Authorities had not located the woman or the dogs Wednesday night.
Burgess said her family has been breeding French bulldogs for more than 20 years and that nothing like this has ever happened before.
The suspect had filled out an application to buy a puppy before she came to Burgess’ home.
“She did good on the application,” Burgess said. “I did not see any red flags.”
