Pedestrian killed south of Gastonia

GASTONIA -- A pedestrian walking along U.S. 321 south of Gastonia was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday morning, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Joshua Helms, 24, of Gastonia died when he was hit by a car about 7:10 a.m. on U.S. 321 near Stagecoach Road. That is about 3 miles south of Gastonia.

Troopers say the driver of the car that struck Helms reported he walked into the travel lane. Troopers say the investigation is continuing, but no charges have been filed.

U.S. 321 was closed in the area for about three hours Thursday morning.
