2 teens charged in uptown phone theft

Two teens, aged 16 and 13, have been arrested in connection with the theft of a cell phone from a man walking in uptown last Thursday afternoon, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.

Investigators say a man walking in the 300 block of East 7th Street, between Brevard and Caldwell streets, reported that two people approached and punched him about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. One man took the victim’s cell phone, and the pair ran off.

Police, on foot and bicycle, began looking for the suspects and found them a short time later. Police recovered the stolen cell phone nearby, investigators say.

The 16-year-old was identified as Devante Perkins. He and the juvenile, whose name has not been released, were charged with common law robbery.
