Police identify body found in Hickory motel, charge suspect

Hickory police have arrested and charged a suspect in the alleged murder of a woman whose body was found under a bed in a Motel 6 Friday afternoon.

The victim was Hickory resident Loretta Joyce Chadwick, 48, officials said in a statement.

Police said they arrested 40-year-old Ricky Allen Payne of Hickory, and charged him with first-degree murder; resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Payne received no bond and is being held in the Catawba County Jail.

Police were called to the motel on Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard just before noon on Friday and haven’t said when or how Chadwick died.

Payne’s first court appearance will be June 10 in Newton, police said.
