Style File: Kevin Fielden

Lynn Trenning

Kevin Fielden’s impetus for opening Jilson’s Men’s Consignment was his own closet, filled with clothes that still bore original tags. A Knoxville native who spent his formative years in Florida, Fielden, 44, began his career at Goody’s Family Clothing after graduating with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from University of Tennessee.

He worked in the marketing department at Belk from 1999-2006, and moved to Charlotte in 2002. Luxury cars are one of Fielden’s passions, and in 2004 he formed the Charlotte Area Ferrari Enthusiasts club. Fielden lives in Charlotte with his wife Ruth, and daughter, Samantha.

Find his store at 117 Middleton Drive in Charlotte, off Providence Road just north of the Queens Road intersection.

Q. Do you own a Ferrari?

I’ve had a passion for cars since I was a little kid, and in college I got focused on Ferrari and bought my first one in 2003. I own two. A 1976 512 BB and a 1984 308 GTS.

Q. When did your style become distinctive?

In high school. I would get compliments for dressing up in Sunday School. But I was also part of the surfer skater culture. I was rocking the Quicksilver Boardshorts and Rainbow sandals years ago. I am still wearing my leather pair from 1986.

Q. What’s the first piece of clothing you remember?

I loved my little Ocean Pacific shirt. My mom bought it.

Q. Who is your favorite suit designer?

I like Zegna, for the quality.

Q. Shirts?

Lorenzini fits me to a tee.

Q. Pants?

7 for All Mankind is a good jean.

Q. How do you choose what pieces to sell in your store?

Everything has to be in extremely good condition. I take Banana Republic/J. Crew level and above; the sky is the limit.

Q. How do you accessorize?

With a nice cap, occasionally cufflinks. I made these custom Scrabble tile cufflinks, because people were asking for them.

Q. Where do you shop in Charlotte?

Taylor Richards & Conger, and Paul Simon.

Q. What are your go-to pieces?

I have a Corneliani jacket that has a built-in vest. I have a casual C.P. Company jacket that I wear a lot.

Q. What piece of clothing can’t you live without?

I have a custom racing jacket that I love. It’s connected with the gentleman that broke the transcontinental speed record by crossing the country in 31 hours and four minutes.

Q. Do you have any fashion role models?

David Bowie is the man. He has reinvented himself so many times, and he is top notch every time. And Steve McQueen, he’s one of the coolest people to ever walk the earth.

Q. Tell me about your watch.

It’s a Rolex GMT Master II. I have others but I wear this one 99% of the time. I bought it a number of years ago and they were doing 0% financing.

Q. What was your biggest splurge?

The Ferraris. The watches. I think they are great investments.

Q. What fashion advice can you give to men?

Dress like you care.
