The second annual C2 Survival Race, sponsored by the Steele Creek and Morrison YMCAs, will be June 22 at Cane Creek Park in Waxhaw. The trail is 3 miles long, with 16 obstacles and the race starts at 8 a.m. You can register the day of the race, or online ahead of time. Individuals or teams can compete. If you can’t do one of the obstacles, you have to complete a certain number of “burpees.”A burpee is a four-count maneuver where you start with a squat thrust, jump back into a push-up position, jump up and leap into the air.On second thought, maybe climbing in and out of a Dumpster for Obstacle No. 1 is a better choice. No special gear is needed. Throw on some old athletic gear you don’t mind getting muddy or immersed in lake water. All proceeds from the race benefit the Steele Creek after-school and summer camp programs. Financial assistance is needed for families in the Nations Ford and Arrowood areas who cannot afford after-school care and day camp in the summer.Andi Kennington, Operations Director at the Steele Creek YMCA, is in charge of the event. “About 200 people participated last year, and we used their feedback to add some features to the race,” she said.“New this year is a Dumpster crawl and a water obstacle, where you have to swim part of the lake.”Corporate sponsors of the race are: Peak 10, Microsoft, Moore and Van Allen Law Firm, and Christ the King Church. “The largest age category is people in their 30s and 40s, but we certainly have people in their 50s,” Kennington said. You can register individually, and the cost is $55. It’s $45 per person to register as a team. There also is a new youth category for 14 and older, which is $35.Medals will be awarded. What makes it so hard? Think climbing over an A-wall, running half a mile, rolling tires and then getting on the Balance Teeter-Totter with your body shaking. Then go run some more. Michelle Miller, operations director for the Morrison YMCA, said “Everyone feels empowered and enjoys the teambuilding. If you register as a team, you have to help each other and do the entire course together. If a member lags behind, you can walk the course.”
