Charlotte student wins $1,000 scholarship

Graduating Phillip O. Berry senior Heather Cauthen, a Communities in Schools Safe Journey student, won the program's Reaching Individual Success through collective Effort (RISE) leadership award, which includes a $1,000 college scholarship.

Heather, who has a 2-year-old daughter, in a member of the Safe Journey program for teen mothers. She also participates in student organizations Committed Youth Involvement, Student Council and Health Occupations Students of America.

She has been selected for the mayor’s Youth Employment Program to pursue career development opportunities during the summer and will attend Gardner-Webb University.
