Dine out Tuesday, help local students

Charlotte-area residents will get their annual opportunity Tuesday to dine out and help students in need.

Communities In Schools is holding its 14th annual Dine Out for Kids event, with more than 60 restaurants in Mecklenburg County donating a share of their proceeds to the organization.

The Charlotte chapter of Communities In Schools was the first to team with restaurants as a fundraising event.

“Now the idea has spread to a number of other Communities In Schools organizations around the country,” CIS spokeswoman May Johnston said.

Communities in Schools provides a variety of support programs for more than 6,800 students at 45 Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools with high percentages of low-income students. That support can range from tutorial help and guest speakers at schools to college scholarships.

A key goal of the organization is to prevent students from dropping out.

“We’re excited about having eight new restaurants join us this year,” Johnston said.

Dine Out for Kids is CIS’ biggest communitywide event of the year.

“In addition to raising money, it also increases awareness of what we do, and the needs out there,” Johnston added.
