Stanly customers lose power again

Five days after a severe thunderstorm knocked out power to thousands of customers in Stanly County, residents had to deal with an outage again Tuesday night.

Union Power Cooperative reported that about 2,500 of its customers -- more than half of them in Stanly County -- lost power due to an equipment failure of some type.

A Union Power spokeswoman said the main line feeding substations in Richfield (northern Stanly County) and Rowan County stopped working about 9 p.m. The outage affected nearly 1,270 customers in Stanly, another 1,086 in Rowan, and 138 in Cabarrus.

Last Thursday’s storm knocked down numerous trees across the same area, and some residents did not have power restored until late in the weekend.
