Caldwell authorities: Fire was set

LENOIR – Fire investigators say the blaze that destroyed a mobile home Tuesday evening in Caldwell County was not accidental.

Fire was reported around 5 p.m. at a home in the 3200 block of Berry Court in Gamewell, according to Caldwell officials. A neighbor called 911 after her children said they saw smoke.

Dino Dibernardi, an investigator with the Caldwell County Fire Marshal’s Office, said the mobile home suffered $50,000 damage and was a total loss.

He said the home was vacant, with no electrical power or water connected. The home’s owner, William Earl Hawkins of Greensboro, told authorities he used the building as a rental unit but said it had been vacant for some time. Hawkins also said he had been experiencing problems with vandalism and had filed several reports with the sheriff’s office.
