Foxx confirmation may come by Thursday

WASHINGTON The U.S. Senate is expected to confirm Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx as transportation secretary later in the week, a senior Senate staffer said Monday.

The staffer said Foxx’s confirmation could come before a final vote on immigration this week.

Foxx is expected to be confirmed easily, likely on or before Thursday. A Senate vote on comprehensive immigration legislation is expected Thursday.

Foxx is expected to resign as mayor when he’s sworn in as secretary. The City Council is expected to name an interim mayor who would serve until after this fall’s election.

Ray LaHood, who Foxx would replace at DOT, was scheduled to deliver his farewell remarks on Thursday at the National Press Club. LaHood, a former Republican congressman from Illinois, has served more than four years in Obama’s cabinet.
