Foxx to submit resignation as Charlotte mayor Monday

By Steve Harrison
Staff Writer

The Charlotte City Council will hold a special meeting Monday where Anthony Foxx will resign as mayor, four days after being confirmed as U.S. secretary of transportation by the Senate in a 100-0 vote.

Foxx will then be sworn in by the White House and join President Barack Obama’s cabinet, possibly later in the week.

Foxx has been mayor since 2009. Before that, he served two terms on the City Council.

The mayor is expected to make a few remarks before stepping down. It’s possible council members could pick a new mayor Monday, though they aren’t required to name his replacement by a certain time.

The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. in the City Council chambers at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. Fourth. St.
