Alcohol suspected in fatal Union crash

A Stanly County man is jailed Tuesday, charged in connection with a head-on crash that killed a Charlotte man Monday night in Union County.

Andrez Lobato, 22, of Oakboro, was charged by the N.C. Highway Patrol with felony death by vehicle in the collision, which was reported about 11:30 p.m. on U.S. 601 north of Monroe.

Highway Patrol Sgt. M.R. Leach said alcohol use is suspected, and additional charges are possible in the case. The name of the victim has not been released.

Leach said Lobato was behind the wheel of a 2003 Chevrolet pick-up truck and was southbound on U.S. 601 near C.J. Thomas Road. Troopers say the truck crossed the center line and struck a 2012 Honda CRV driven by the victim. Leach said the Honda’s driver died at the scene.

Lobato was taken by CMC-Union for treatment of injuries and then jailed. He is being held under $500,000 bond, troopers say.
