Robert Pittenger June 27 in Washington, D.C. The group was there for a conference held by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform in 2013. South Charlotte Middle is one of 103 schools nationwide recognized by the forum as a School to Watch. The program recognizes schools for improvement in the performance of middle grade students. UNC-Chapel Hill Art contest: The UNC Nutrition Research Institute has announced a Summer Art and Essay contest to celebrate its five year anniversary. Keystone Montessori School opening: Keystone, a new Montessori school, will open this fall in the education building at Sedgefield United Methodist Church, 2830 Dorchester Place. For the initial year, the school will have a primary class for 3-6 year olds. The school plans to add an elementary class in the fall of 2014. Myers Park High Construction update: The stadium project is scheduled for completion in early August. Gym construction has begun and is scheduled to be complete August 2014. The LA Building renovation is scheduled to begin June 2014. The Art Gallery and Cafeteria are being refitted with new doors and windows.Olympic High Chestnut tree project: Students in the Olympic High School B-3 Summer Program are working to develop a disease-resistant American chestnut tree. Chestnut blight has killed billions of the trees since 1904. The students are studying genes in the Chinese chestnut that would make the American chestnut resistant to the blight fungus. Independence High Free SAT, ACT test prep: For a free online tutorial program to prepare students for national tests, visit www.cms.k12.nc.us. Then choose the “Departments” tab, choose the “C-D” tab, choose “Curriculum and Instruction Department website, go to “Free test prep for college entrance exams”, choose “Independence High School” then enter username (student id) and password (student birth date).
