1 dead in I-85 wreck in Gaston County

KINGS MOUNTAIN – One person was killed Friday morning in a multi-vehicle wreck involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 in western Gaston County, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Police say a person driving a 1991 Mercury sedan was trying to get onto I-85 N at exit 10A, but was driving too fast for conditions.

Police said the driver hydroplaned and went into the left lane and over the median. A tractor-trailer driven by Jason McDowell, 33, collided with the sedan and pushed it approximately 100 feet. The tractor-trailer turned on its side.

The driver of the sedan was killed. McDowell was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The wreck was reported about 9:30 a.m.
