Bob Hall has helped turn Lake Norman into one of the top softball programs in the state during the last four seasons.Hall, whose Wildcats have been 95-11 during that span, led his team to a 21-3 record, an I-Meck 4A crown and a trip to the third round of the 4A state playoffs, where they lost to eventual state champion Alexander Central.Hough was the only local team to beat Lake Norman this season, defeating the Wildcats 4-1 in the I-Meck tournament final behind big performances by Hall’s daughters, Kayla and Tori.Hopewell also made some noise, finishing second in I-Meck regular-season standings.North Lincoln (21-5, 13-1) had one of its best seasons in school history, winning the Southern Piedmont Conference title, while Lincoln Charter (21-2) also had their best season to date. Lake Norman softball player of the year: Shelby Bailey, Lake Norman – Shelby Bailey has been a big part of Lake Norman’s success the last few years.But in the senior shortstop’s final season in a Wildcat uniform, Bailey was at her best, hitting .543 for the season with three home runs, 26 RBI and 27 runs.That earned Bailey I-Meck Player of the Year and all-district honors.Bailey will continue her softball career at Transylvania University (Ky.). Lake Norman softball pitcher of the year: Dominique Wilson, Lake Norman – After taking her turn, Dominique Wilson knew she could be a dominating force for the Wildcats.Wilson made the most of her senior season, going 13-3 with an 0.95 ERA and 97 strikeouts.Wilson also came up big at the plate, hitting .500 with a team-high four home runs and 33 RBI.Like Bailey, Wilson will also get a chance to further her softball career in college. She signed to play at N.C. Central. Lake Norman softball coaches of the year: Dana Catchpole and Janna Lewis, Hopewell – Dana Catchpole and Janna Lewis answered the challenge when they took over the Hopewell softball program this season.The co-head coaches proved they belonged in the competitive I-Meck by leading their team to a second-place finish in the league. The Titans were 15-6 for the year, including 11-3 in conference play.With four all-district performers, Brooke Myers, Ada Thompson, Patricia Thompson and Shelby Wiggs, expected to be back next year, the Titans should be an immediate contender in new MECKA conference, where they will have to battle rival Hough and 3A runner-up Jay M. Central signee, was dominant on the mound.• Katrina Cassel, Hough, Fr. – All I-Meck, all-district rookie was 10-3 with 88 strikeouts.• Brooke Myers, Hopewell, Fr. – Another All-I-Meck, all-district freshman. she went 9-1 on the mound.• Regan Smith, Bandys, Soph. – District pitcher of the year was a big factor for Trojans.Catchers• Kayla McGuffey, Lake Norman, Sr. – Morehead State signee had monster year at the plate, hitting .603, and behind it.• Courtney Trickle, North Lincoln, So. – Knight had breakthrough year, hitting .455 with seven home runs, 32 RBI.Infielders• Shelby Bailey, Lake Norman, Sr. – I-Meck Player of the Year, all-district pick hit .543.• Shelby Wiggs, Hopewell, Jr. – All-conference, all-district selection led Titans with .525 and four home runs.• Katelyn Shifflett, Hough, Jr. – All I-Meck, all-District pick hit .433 with five homers, 25 RBI.• Patricia Thompson, Hopewell, Jr. – All I-Meck, all-district Titan had hit .479 with 41 RBI.• Mackenzie Winslow, Lake Norman, Jr. – All-district first baseman hit .371 with two home runs for Wildcats.Outfielders• Kayla Hall, Hough, Sr. – College of Charleston signee was All-I-Meck, all-district after hitting .508.• Leah Murray, Hough, So. – All-conference, all-district performer led Huskies with .542 batting average.• Sydney Ditto, Lake Norman, So. – All-I-Meck, all-district pick emerged on talented team, hitting .419, scoring 28 runs.Designated hitter• Sarah Kenley, Lincoln Charter, Sr. – Lenoir-Rhyne signee hit .519 with five home runs, 25 RBI, 27 runs.• Taylor Wilson, East Lincoln, Jr. – Mustang hit .472 with four home runs, 35 RBI.Utility players• Josie Weber, Lincoln Charter, Jr. – All-district pick was 9-0 on the mound, hit .459.• Hollyn Franklin, North Lincoln, Jr. – Knights’ ace on the mound (13-3), also hit .441 with six home runs.
