Oh, the bliss of reclaiming an opportunity that you previously missed...

It was an awesome day to spend on the lake… Unseasonably cool (relatively speaking for July), alternately overcast and rainy with occasional stretches of steamy sunshine. The time together made it great…

John and I spent the morning trolling the edge of close coves, searching for a hot spot to catch a mess of pan fish for supper; we worked our crank baits with moderate success. Minutes slipped by unnoticed as we fell into an easy rhythm, united by our common goal and a pre-determined division of duties: his, navigating the boat and stringing lures; mine, fish removal and deciding to keep or release... It was calm, quiet and mostly uneventful, save for a single lost lure…

Beth joined us mid-day; after procuring her fishing license, she and I whiled away the afternoon fishing off the side of our dirt road embankment… It was a bit more exciting with her: high-stepping around poison ivy plants; ants crawling onto (and subsequently biting) our ankles thanks to tall grass strands; a few rounds of tree fishing (nothing lost, thankfully); me landing two fish with a single cast (never happened before, can’t see that ever happening again) and Beth accidentally casting the top half of her rod into the water alongside her lure and line…

At some point during the afternoon I had an epiphany…I looked over at Beth and said, “Wow, I think this is the first time you and I have actually gone fishing together.” After thinking about it for a minute or two, she agreed…

I grew up spending a tremendous amount of time with my grandparents at their lake house; Grandpa taught me all I know about angling and Lake Murray. Years later, Beth was blessed to learn the same things from him as well.

But as crazy as it seems, Beth and I never managed to drop a line in the water together previously. Ditto Brian and Grace.

I try not to waste time and energy regretting all of the things I failed to do when my kids were younger. If I knew then what I know now, my priorities would have definitely been different…
