US Airways awarded rights for CLT-Sao Paulo flights

The federal government has awarded US Airways permanent rights to fly between Charlotte and São Paulo, Brazil, U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan said Thursday.

US Airways began the flights last month, using international flight slots leased from United Airlines. The company needed permanent approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to continue the flights beyond 2014.

“Uninterrupted, nonstop air service between Charlotte and São Paulo is critical to maintaining our existing trade with Brazil and expanding business opportunities for North Carolina,” said Hagan, in a statement.

US Airways operates the daily, nonstop flights on a Boeing 767 jet that seats 204. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is US Airways’ busiest hub, with almost 650 daily flights and 30 international destinations.
