One person was killed and three others were injured during a drive-by shooting Thursday afternoon that caused the lockdown of a northern Charlotte elementary school.

The shootings happened just after 1 p.m. on Reagan Drive in the Hidden Valley neighborhood near where Interstate 85 meets University City Boulevard.

No one had been arrested in connection with the shootings as of Thursday night, and officers hadn’t released a description of the suspect.

The victims were inside a car on Reagan Drive when another vehicle pulled up beside them and someone inside opened fire, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Capt. Rob Dance, who heads the North Tryon division, where the shootings happened.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found two victims. One was inside a car, dead from a gunshot wound. Another was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with what officers described as life-threatening injuries. Investigators also learned that two other people had been shot during the incident and had injuries that were not life-threatening. Those victims were transported to local hospitals by civilians.

Police had not released the identities of the victims late Thursday because their families had not been notified.

Investigators also received information that the suspect’s vehicle may have been seen close to Hidden Valley Elementary School, which was placed on lockdown for about an hour as a precaution. No one inside the school was injured.

Thursday’s shooting incident was the second time in less than a month that the elementary school has been locked down because of violence.

On June 17, shots were fired in the school’s parking lot after an undercover police officer and a confidential informant bought drugs from two suspects – part of what CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe called a larger operation in the neighborhood.

Police say the drug dealers shot and tried to rob the informant. Then officers returned fire, killing one of the suspects. Officers arrested the other suspect.

Police encourage anyone with information about Thursday’s shootings to call 704-432-TIPS to speak directly to a homicide detective. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
