Athletes from Cabarrus County who got gold medals at this year’s national summer Special Olympics could represent North Carolina in next year’s event in New Jersey.Including individual and team events, 81 Cabarrus athletes took home 93 medals: 31 gold, 34 silver and 28 bronze. The Summer Games took place in Raleigh in early June. The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games are planned for next June in New Jersey. Here’s a list of participating Cabarrus County athletes with results from the recent state competition.Athletics/track and fieldAthletes Amanda Bass, Austin Brown, Olivia Gallo, William “Tyler” Hudson, Stephen O’Morrow, Dorothy Pipkin, Wendy Pipkin, Chelsey Scott, Lee Scott, Mary Turner and Mi’cayiah Welch brought home eight gold medals, 18 silver and four bronze. The coach is Marisa Dickey.AquaticsMembers of the “Dolphins” Aquatics Team who participated are Amanda Auten, Jessica Blackwelder, Caitlyn Chambers, Amy Craver, Amanda Faggart, Joseph Griffin, Mark Harwood, Starr Kluttz, Ryan McCauley, John Mulhall, Christian Patterson, Douglas “Aaron” Potts, Darius Robinson, Paige Soderman, Conner Stipe, Landon Stipe and Justin Watkins. Including individual and relay events, the group won 17 gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals.Coaches are Lynn Lambert, Mark Lambert, Kristi Leonard, Betty Lewis, Alyssa Mulhall and Marianne Soderman. Cabarrus County athletes on the team were Jamie Bass, Joseph Blackburn, T.J. Carpenter, Marvin Deese, Joseph Felts, Richard “Tim” Ford, Angie Freeman, Patrick Harrington, Payton Hitchcock, Michael Kinlaw, Brian “Cecil” Knight, Antonio “Jarel” McKinley, Bill Trull and Matthew Wheeler. Coaches are Suzie Lloyd, Ron Wheeler and Lisa Wheeler.• The Cabarrus Lightning Bolts brought home gold for the second time in two seasons. Athletes are Jonathan “David” Basinger, Anthony Brown, Curtis Buchanan, David Farris, Jordan Harkey, Jonathan Helms, Alexus Herron, Brian Hutchinson, Jasmine McKinley, Stacy Sapp and Craig Szekely. Coaches are Ricky Frederick, Darlene Helms and Shelli King.Volleyball teams• The Cabarrus Fire won a bronze. Athletes are Patrick Manning, Christina McNeely, Justin Monk, Jimauris Pharr, Rodney Shipp, Carla Simmons, Aaron Spencer, David Tandarich and Chastity Yow. • The Cabarrus Spikers Unified team won a silver medal. Athletes on the team are Victoria Barbee, Alyssa Coffey, Harry Kaiser, Mariah Mauro, Nicco Mauro, Tyler Sparks, Heather Tandarich, Jesalyn Ward and Courtney Wethington.Coaches for both volleyball teams are Carol Goodrich and Barbara Manning.
