Police ID Shelby shooting victim

SHELBY – Police say a 24-year-old Bessemer City woman was the victim of a fatal shooting early Saturday morning.

And they say the shooting was a case of self-defense.

Shelby police have identified the victim as Latashsa Vanessa Petty. Officers found her shortly before 1 a.m. in a parking lot on Ramblewood Drive. She was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

A 20-year-old man, Steven Tyrell Morris, was charged by police with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, and resisting, obstructing and delaying. Morris is jailed in Shelby.

Police said Tuesday that they have determined Morris fired in self-defense.
