Crews make progress on flood-damaged roads

State crews hope to finish work this week on repairs to several flood-damaged roads in the Charlotte region, but some projects will have to wait a while, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Project completions are expected by the end of the week on one of the three washed-out roads in Huntersville and on two of five damage sites in Cabarrus County.

But in a few cases, no completion date has been set, the DOT says.

Flash flooding June 28 damaged a number of roads in Mecklenburg, Lincoln and Cabarrus counties. Two days later, another round of flooding hit Anson, Stanly, Richmond, Montgomery and Cabarrus counties. Additional flooding washed out roads last week in several mountain counties.

Jennifer Thompson of the N.C. Department of Transportation says crews have been working for almost two weeks on repairs.

“In some cases, the department is utilizing contractors to speed up repairs,” she said.

The biggest project in Huntersville is a washout on Gilead Road, which is used by many motorists to get from Beatties Ford Road to residential areas closer to the center of the town. Thompson says work on that project will begin Aug. 5, with completion set for Aug. 23.
